A Literature Review on the Optimal Placement of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) in Distribution Networks

The existing distribution networks were designed at a time when there was virtually no embedded generation. design methods ensured the voltage various parts of network remained within limits required by standards, and for most part, this very successfully achieved. As Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) started to grow, rise in due injected currents local impedances push voltages toward, even above, desired upper limits. Voltage are based on typical appliance requirements, long-term over-voltages will ultimately result unacceptably short life spans. Distribution Static Compensators (dSTATCOMs) shunt-connected devices that can improve low-voltage networks’ performance injecting do not transfer real power. be reactive, negative or zero sequence, harmonic. System improved reducing conduction loss, improving profile balance, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). To obtain these benefits, optimal sizes dSTATCOMs need placed locations network. This paper has considered seventy research articles published over past years related placement sizing dSTATCOMs. In study, minimization power losses, improvement, loadablity factor, sag mitigation, reduction annual operating costs fitness functions subjected multiple constraint sets. optimization algorithms found literature categorized into six methods: analytical methods, artificial neural network-based sensitivity approaches, metaheuristic combination analysis, miscellaneous. study also presents comparison among types, load flow tools, etc. Therefore, comprehensive review allocation is presented paper, guidance future provided.
